Scenes from Hurricane Sandy

Walking through our Queens neighborhood yesterday, I realized how lucky Chris and I were through all of this. Many people right near us and even down the block from us have been without power for over a day now but we have been fine with no power outages at all. Our neighborhood has many, many down tress.

Scenes from New York - Hurricane Sandy

Well, we made it through the worst of the storm! So far we don't see any damage to our house, though some siding came off of our neighbors house and I'm pretty sure fell on, or scraped, our cars. We'll have to check on that today for further reports. All public transportation is down again today which means another day home!!! :) :) :) I just loved unexpected days off of work. Yesterday, my day started off cuddling with this little lady:

Two trees did come down on our block, and shut down the road on one side of us. It was quite a task trying to get Zoey to even go outside, let alone take care of her business. And I spent lots of time in the kitchen prepping some dinners I'm hoping to tackle this week. 
When I have off of work, I love to try out new and involved recipes that I normally don't have time for. I also wanted to make some non-perishables in case our power went out. (It didn't!)

Yesterday, I tackled some homemade cinnamon buns, and they were met with rave reviews! Which means, Chris approved, so this will be a keeper. I used a recipe from my Cook Illustrated Cookbook, which I also found here.
Any other Hurricane Sandy peeps out there? What did you do with your days off?

I'm off of work today as the MTA has shut down all public transportation in preparation for Hurricane Sandy! It's a pleasant surprise to have a long weekend, and we had a great weekend as it was!

Our weekend in New Jersey

This past weekend we had a wonderful time visiting our friends, Christina and Kenny, in New Jersey for another weekend of Fall-filled festivities! I always love the weekends we visit with them, and this one didn't disappoint as it was complete with corn mazes, apple cider, Poltergeist, and one of the most amazing home-cooked meals I've had in a long time.
 
 They made us pork wellington with risotto. I am still dreaming about how good this dinner was! Christina also made pumpkin chocolate chip, butterscotch cookies. I forget exactly what all was in them, but they were amazing!

As I am starting to turn to other blogs as form of inspiration, I came across this video yesterday from White on Rice Couple, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite blogs. I thought this video was beautiful and inspirational. I know I should want to be me...but is it bad to wish, just a little, that I was more like them?

Last night's dinner

Last night, I made a wonderful dinner, (if I do say so myself) of pretzel chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese, and caramelized brussel sprouts. It took me one hour to make...and probably 10 minutes to eat. We each had 2 glasses of Concord Wine from our trip to Clover Hill Winery this past weekend. Chris enjoyed it, too...though he didn't try the brussel sprouts (sigh).

  • I have wanted to make Pretzel Chicken for well over a year now and had this receipt tucked away for months. I finally decided that enough was enough. It was a big success, though I think I'll crush the pretzels finer next time, and maybe try it with chicken cutlets for optimal crunch. Either way, I'm making this again.

  • This is the second time I've made this dish this week. I'm the only one who eats it but it's super fast, and super delicious. I used half the brown sugar and half the craisins in my version to make it a "little" healthier.
Macaroni and Cheese from White on Rice Couple
  • This is also the second time I've made this, the first time being last winter. I think this is an amazing alternative to Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, which really...is hard to beat. It cooks really fast (mine cooked in about 5 minutes last night instead of the 15-20 it says in the recipe..maybe I had my heat too high?) But it came out fine regardless. Chris approves of this mac and cheese...which is good in my book because he LOVES his kraft.

I find that at this time of year, all I want to do is be in the kitchen and try out new recipes. We've been super busy lately, but as our schedule winds down in the next few weeks, I am preparing my arsenal of "recipes to try" and can't wait to get my hands dirty!
