6 Degrees of Separation

I think it's cool when people I know become famous. As my good friends will tell you, I take any chance I get to tell people that I know Amanda Seyfried.

She grew up near me in Pennsylvania and I used to play the piano for her voice lessons when I was in High School. And I worked out next to her at the gym once, but it had been quite a few years since I'd seen her, it was after Mean Girls, and I just didn't know what to say. I tried to think of things to strike up a conversation several times and chickened out every time:
"Hey..you're that girl from Mean Girls, right?"
"Hey! I used to play piano for you...how's Lindsay Lohan?"
"Hey girl! Long time no see, tellmeeverythingabouthollywoodandLindsayLohan!! Wanna be BFFS4lyfe?!"

But now, I feel like I have a closer friend in Hollywood with Dane, an old friend from my summer theater camp days.

We were in a very close-knit group of friends and would all hang out together literally all day, every day for 4 summers straight. It's been a couple years since I've seen him, but after starring in Chronicle, and also appearing in Lawless and the upcoming movies Kill Your Darlings, and The Place Beyond the Pines, he's someone I know know, and he's hitting the big time!

Two weeks ago, I had dinner with my High School friend, Dave, who I think is also well on his way to hitting the big time either through film or stage acting. He recently booked a commercial and I couldn't be more excited for him. Plus, I think the commercial is hilarious.

Do you know anyone famous, or know someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, that's famous?

  1. Congrats to your friend! I like that you posted this because it really is true, we are all somehow "related" to someone famous. My uncle is in Sons of Anarchy and a girl I went to high school with was Playboy's Miss October. Crazy!

  3. So cool! I had a friend in college whose brother is an actor. He's been in several big movies, including Charlie Wilson's War and Inception. I've pretty much lost touch with the friend over the years, though!

    1. Yea that's what happens --- and then, you don't want it to seem like you're reaching out to them or staying in touch just because they're famous, ya know?

  5. I love Amanda Seyfried! Ha, I would have said something totally dumb to her too..."so really, what's the DEAL with Lindsay?" Hahaha. My husband grew up with comedian Dane Cook...Dane actually mentions his name in his movie "My Best Friend's Girl." Probably the best part of that movie!

    2. Ha! They were really good friends...I think they maybe email once a year or so now? He didn't make the cut for the wedding, for example. I'll keep you posted on setting up that meeting, though! :)

  8. Oh my gosh! I love this post!! I don't think that I know anyone famous, but I am sure to know someone that does. I am from a small town in Mississippi and Sela Ward is from here as well as Oprah, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes, Eudora Welty,Morgan Freeman, BB King and we have a few more claims to fame. I do have a friend that lives in Queens also that attended church with Christian Hoff (played Tommy DiVito in Jersey Boys) and I had the opportunity to meet him and go back stage after the show when I was there last!! HA I love it there! Wish I could call NY home!!

    1. That's so awesome! Jersey Boys is one of my favorite shows, I remember leaving it feeling so happy! I've been backstage of a couple Broadway stages, but not to visit with anyone..I was always passing through with the survey group I work for. (We hand out surveys in the audience to gather demographic statistics of the broadway audience) My friends got engaged on the stage of Wicked though!

    2. Oh I want your job!! That would be awesome!! Christian took my mom and I on the stage and said, "this is our view". I almost died. I can't imagine getting paid to entertain people and perform. I adore singing and theater. The only pay I get is exhaustion after a show! ha.

    3. It was fun going out on the street with all of those people after the show and the guard asking people to clear the way for US little Mississippi gals to go in on the side door!! I am a little in love with this story. ha

    4. It's not my "job, job" just still a perk of an internship I used to have. Haha that is a great story! I would definitely feel cool and important coming out of the Stage Door like that!

  9. I would have totally chickened out talking to Amanda Seyfried too! I don't know anyone famous...but I always tell my students not to forget me when they make it. One of them has to, right?

  12. I agree that the commercial with Dave is so hilarious and as a mom of two it is defintely true. There's no need to be offended. Mom is using her breasts for their primary purpose and he is having a typical reaction! Where's the harm in that? Some day we will look back on that commercial and ask "What was the fuss all about?" I completely love Dave's face when he sees her!
