Homemade Butter

Last week I tried making homemade butter for the first time. I used nothing but whipping cream and a glass jar. It was a bit of work, but it was actually pretty easy, and an interesting (TASTY) science experiment! Through a simple google search, I followed the instructions from this post on Tactical Intelligence.

Homemade Butter

What you'll need:
1 pint of heavy cream
1 glass jar

Directions:
Pour the cream into the jar and shake continually for a good 12-15 minutes.

After about 10 minutes, mine turned into whipped cream! (YUM) And after that it started to get firmer and slowly but surely turned into butter! The buttermilk will separate from the butter. Pour that liquid off (and save it for buttermilk pancakes!) Once the buttermilk is drained, rinse the butter under some water and pour it into a bowl. Mix it around with a fork to release any extra buttermilk. Add salt to taste and voila! You've got homemade butter! The Tactical Intelligence post has much more comprehensive instructions if you're looking for more information.

Chris and I are taking the day off today to.......go to the beach, relax, and have some wonderful time together RUN ERRANDS!! We need to shop for a couch, a coffee table, a new car for Chris, groceries, etc. etc. etc. etc. Since our weekends are pretty full through the end of the month, we really needed to just take a work day off in order to take care of these things, otherwise they'll NEVER get done! So today we're running errands in the rain, which hopefully opens up Saturday and Sunday to enjoy summer! Saturday we have the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner for our friend's wedding next weekend, and Sunday we plan on attending a street fair near us to celebrate the opening weekend of the Belmont Racetrack this weekend.

Hopefully we'll get in some good quality time with Zoey, and take her to the dog park. Especially since we'll be away from this little munchkin for the next two weekends!

What are you doing this weekend?

  1. Weekend plans for us? Ha-everything up in the air in a split second. Woke up to a broken refrigerator-so shopping will be on the list. And the get away to Philly cancelled due to the imminent threat of Tropical Storm Amanda hitting there. Life-it's never a dull moment. Hope you have a great, relaxing weekend.

  3. I made homemade butter once in kindergarten and was so taken by it (city kid...thought butter came from the supermarket) that I have never forgotten it. It's so much fun, right? Good luck today - hope you can get everything done!

  5. Ha, I had no idea that butter was heavy cream. I couldn't tell you what I thought it was, just that it came from cows!! Kinda embarassed for me!!
