The First Trimester

I've already done my 12 and 13 week bumpdates and really, the symptoms I describe in those posts have not been any different from the symptoms I've experienced throughout my first trimester.

Over the past 3 1/2 months, I've had to adjust my eating a bit. After I almost passed out on the subway during my morning commute (one of the scariest moments ever), I got serious about my eating schedule. The day before my fainting scare, I didn't eat right: way too much sugar, not enough protein, my body was MAD. I learned to eat protein every 3-4 hours, I always carry a water bottle with me, and I can't overdo it on the sugar. I've only gotten sick two times and both times it was from overeating (typical...) But really, I do get fuller faster. Small, protein packed meals every 3-4 hours throughout the day is how I have to do it. And really, isn't that the way we should all be eating anyway?

I don't see a whole lot of change here. I had a bit of a pooch to start with and it kind of depends on how I'm standing in some of the pics. Also, as you can see, I missed a few weeks in there. 10 weeks anyone? Where the heck did it go? I totally missed a picture there. I do have a 6 week pic, but it didn't fit into the above. I could probably photoshop a 10 onto my 9 week pic and no one would be the wiser though, there's not much of a change (if any).

I do have this little gem from Corinne's Bachelorette party when I was 10 weeks pregnant! Baby's first bachelorette party!! Also: Please disregard the "Pin the Macho on the Man" poster behind us...whoops!

I haven't started a baby registry yet. Haven't even given it a thought. I think it will be fun once I get started but it's not like registering for your wedding. Registering for your wedding is overwhelming but your biggest decision is something like "What wafflemaker will yield the most delicious waffles?" or "Will these sheets be soft enough for my sensitive skin?" With a baby registry your questions are "What crib is the least likely to kill my child?!" or "How many children have died as a result of this stroller?!?!" The word "overwhelming" doesn't even begin to describe it.

One of the funniest accounts I ever read about setting up a baby registry was in Rachel Dratch's Girl Walks Into a Bar. When she got pregnant, two of her friends insisted they take her baby shopping. By the end of the trip, she walked out of there with a pair of baby socks - they were the only item in the store her friends did not have a warning against that would somehow suffocate, crush, and generally kill her newborn baby. Though a hilarious passage of the book, it's also just sad. New moms have a lot to fear, and what's perfectly "safe" for some is "not safe" to others and vice-versa. How are we supposed to know?

I frequent blogs like BabyKerf - which I pretty much refer to as the "Baby Bible", Kath has the most comprehensive account of her pregnancy and motherhood out there and I pretty much trust anything she says or recommends. I also find myself on the site The Art of Making a Baby quite often and have been able to learn a thing or two about this whole pregnancy thing. Any other blogs, websites or books out there that you can recommend? Any mom's out there that can just tell me what crib and stroller won't kill my child? Any insight is appreciated!

  2. Ohhh....I am so loving this. Now you see why dad and I were such overprotective parents. Of course you swore you weren't going to be so paranoid. This just makes me smile. My advice-do what every good parent before you has done--your best. It will never be perfect but as long as your children know you love them it will work. As for the crib-just buy one that meets the standards-which are always changing. You and Chris and Little Italy will all survive!

  3. Here's the thing most cribs and strollers and so forth that are sold nowadays won't kill your child (just make sure the crib doesn't have the drop sides which I believe are not allowed to be sold anyway). So much of it just comes down to preference but I found reading reviews on on Amazon to be helpful. I got so much information from reading BabyCenter and the forums for my birth month. Some can get catty but most have great information.

  5. Yeah, registering for the wedding was fun!! Registering for the baby just seems overwhelming - I have a friend due in August who said she wanted to run screaming out of Babies R Us after just a few minutes!! Too much STUFF!! But I agree with your Mom's advice - the standards are always changing, so ask your friends who have kids what they like, and find some online sources you trust - and then just pick what seems to work for you!

    1. Yes, i know registering doesn't have to be crazy and I don't have to look into evvverything. I'm just going to slowly but surely build it up and just take it one item/day at a time :)

  6. So fun! Loving the pics! You're starting to show in your 14 week pic for sure! I feel like I do in certain clothing! My husband has been the only one to notice so far.

I've started registering online, but haven't made them public yet and will add to it/edit when we venture to the stores. I find it all SO fun!

Thanks for the recommendations on the baby blogs. I'll check them out!

    1. I actually like your idea a lot of starting the registry online so I can add things I read about them..and then going to the store to edit and figure out other specific things. I may even start a private registry today!
