The Post-Pregnancy Girdle!

Ok ladies, let's get real for a second. Has anyone ever heard of the "Post-Pregnancy Girdle"?

My mother-in-law mentioned this to me well before I was even pregnant. She knows someone who's had 4 or 5 children and has the flattest stomach ever. My mother-in-law finally asked her one day what her secret was, and she pulled out a girdle that she wore after each of her children.

At first, I thought this sounded crazy...but then I read this article about Jessica Alba and other celebrities who are obsessed with their post-pregnancy girdles and the idea of "body wrapping." So I started to do a little digging around on the subject.

Wow. This is like, a real thing. And whether it's a gimmick or not - if it's giving me at least a chance at having a flatter, smoother stomach after pregnancy - then gosh darnit, I'm going to try it!

Just do a search on either amazon or even google for post-pregnancy girdles and you will find a whole SLEW of girdles out there promising to make you slim and trim post baby. Belly Bandit, Hipslimmer, and Hourglass Angel to name a few, will promise you a faster and easier return to your old body. Of course, this is not a "fix-all" solution and obviously results are best when combined with exercise and a healthy diet. Before you think I've fallen victim to a marketing gimmick, the thing is...I think the idea of this kind of makes sense. According to Bellfit on Amazon:
Begin wearing after birth on the day that you are discharged from the hospital. It's optimal to begin wearing Bellefit right after childbirth, however, it can be worn up to 6 months postpartum. Here's why: Still present after childbirth for up to 6 months are hormones secreted during pregnancy. These hormones, Estrogen, progesterone and relaxin loosen the abdominal muscles, the pelvic structure and supporting ligaments and joints. Bellefit works together with your body's natural process of recovery. The Girdle/Corset acts to retract the body by drawing in stretched muscles and provides medical-grade compression to your abdominal area.

And according to the Daily News Article:
Wrapping or binding the body after a baby is nothing new in many cultures, and is rooted in traditions from all over the world. Japanese women wear a “sarashi” for binding, Latino women wrap themselves with a “faja,” and there are similar traditions everywhere from Asia and the Middle East to Europe and South America. In fact, North Americans may be the last people to this popular party.

I mean, think about it. For 9 months your stomach is being stretched, stretched, stretched from the inside-out. Why not compress, compress, compress, from the outside-in after the baby is born? It might be the most uncomfortable thing in the world, and I'm lucky that I will be giving birth just as winter begins: I can hide it under my clothes and I won't have to be uncomfortably hot with it in the summer, but I am very curious to at least give this a try and find a girdle that's right for me (haha never thought I'd be saying that!) Who knows...maybe I'll even finally get that bikini body I've always wanted?! ;)

So what do you think? Do you think this is crazy? (You can tell me if I'm crazy...I can take it...) Have you ever heard of the post-pregnancy girdle before? Would you give it a try?

  1. Hahah I used a bind wrap they gave me at the hospital in the beginning. You are so swollen/uterus is still inflated for the first 2 weeks. Then I switched to a girdle (but a regular one at the store)...I wore it for over a month even in my sleep. Sometimes I still wear it for fun. haha. I do not have a flat stomach yet...and since I stopped breastfeeding losing the weight is slower I think...but I am doing it. :-) You don't have to get a fancy one...but do get one!

    1. So interesting, I had no idea they gave you a wrap even at the hospital! I plan on trying to wear one day AND night for as many months as I am willing to put up with it..up till 6 months after the baby. We'll see if by day 3 I'm like "nope..done." Haha

  2. haha I just saw something like this in a consignment shop yesterday and I was skeptical. Although, I'll try anything to make sure that the belly doesn't stick around longer than necessary!

    1. I know, that's how I feel...might as well give it a try and see. It certainly seems to be way more common than I ever thought..even in reading today's comments!

  3. I think I would probably eat a frog, while doing back flips, and singing the Macarana if it made my body go back to what it was before children (when I have them of course), haha, so I say it can't hurt to try!

  4. My mom had abdominal surgery a while back, so she gave me her girdle for after Abbie was born. I really only wore it during the day. I'm not sure it helped my belly flatten, but it at minimum gave my midsection extra (very needed) support in those early weeks. The concept really does make sense, and I'm going to be a bit more diligent about wearing it next time around!

    1. I have heard that women like having that extra support and just find it actually comfortable for that reason, and I can see how it would. It would also just force/remind me to keep better posture and stuff. I agree, the concept makes sense to me...so I'm going to give it a try

  6. Can I just say that K's back flipping, frog eating, Macarana singing performance could rival anything Pink has ever done! I'd pay to see it. Lol! This sounds hokey to me but given that I wasn't even supposed to do one abdominal exercise until 6 weeks post-partum (I worked out after 3 weeks anyway)I can see where this might help "squeeze" things back to where they belong. Plus, the support probably really does feel good. I wonder what a PT might say.

  7. I'm not sure if this would really work but it can't hurt to try. Though the thought of wearing something like this after a C-section sounds a bit painful. If you have a natural delivery it would probably be easier to use.

    1. Yea I agree about the c-section, and they do have modified girdles for women with c-sectins, and modified wearing instructions.

  9. Someone at work told me about this and I was skeptical at first...but hey, if it helps get my stomach back to pre-pregnancy size I'm all for it. I need to check out Amazon and get one ordered!

  12. Ha, some women wear Spanx every day when they aren't pregnant, so this isn't crazier than that. Plus, I agree with your idea of your body is stretching for 9 months - it makes sense to support it with some sort of wrap or girdle to help compress it back! I'll be curious to see what you think!

  13. i wish i would have worn my so-called griddle when i had the chance....get it ready!
