Bumpdate: 29 Weeks

How Far Along: 29 Weeks! Last week of the 20's!

Baby is the size of: Butternut Squash

Total Weight Gain: 24 pounds

Sleep: Pretty good this week. I think I'm slowly becoming a morning person. Not in the "Bright and chipper" sense, but in the I wake up earlier and can't go back to sleep sense.

Best Moment of the week:
*One of my goals during pregnancy is to be able to still do a split when I'm 9 months pregnant...so far...so good! Thanks so my friend Corinne for capturing this moment for me! I so hope I can keep this up!

However, I will say...getting into the split isn't exactly glamorous::

*YOGA!! Omg how I missed prenatal yoga, it felt sooo good to go back after a two week hiatus!

*Baby Safe Class! I wish I could file this under "mediocre moment of the week" (Review of the class will be up tomorrow!)

*I'm 99% sure I felt little baby hiccups this week! They were kind of like little kicks, but very rhythmic and it just made sense that they were hiccups.

*Taking some pictures with Chris in Salem this weekend!

Worst Moment of the Week:
*Being openly openly judged by the woman sitting next to me at the nail salon for getting a gel manicure. She was more so inquisitive about what I was having done, and then said "Oh...so you're not getting it done again until after the baby is born then right?" I told her that I was getting it done and that I am a very careful person and feel that there is no harm done by continuing.

I mean honestly, even with just the fumes at a nail salon at least with a gel manicure I only have to sit there every 3 weeks as opposed to one or two! However, that's not even the point. First, let me start out by saying that throughout my pregnancy I have been extremely careful, and research-oriented through mostly everything I do. I haven't taken a single medication except a few tums here and there, I don't dye my hair, I take my vitamins daily, I've avoided all the foods I'm supposed to avoid (except for certain soft cheeses in moderation), I do yoga, I eat a variety of things, etc. etc. When it came to gel manicures, I did do the research - and well ok, the research isn't really there. Gel manicures are a fairly new thing, but it's such a small, non-invasive sort of thing that it would be next to impossible to actually trace it's effects because you're not really doing anything that harmful.

Here's what I do know (or think, or semi-researched):
  • The 5-8 minutes of UV light that I'm getting is less invasive than the UV Rays I would get from the sun on my hour long lunch-break walks.
  • If this is the one thing that I do that's maybe not "scientifically researched" I think I'm ok. As my coworker said "If you encounter a problem with your baby...it's not because you got gel manicures." Women every day do far more "harmful" things while they are pregnant - not that that justifies anything, just saying.
We are conditioned to fear everything and while for the most part I strive to live a healthy, balanced, natural life...I know that after awhile you can drive yourself crazy with constantly googling every little thing. "How long can I be in the sun?" "Is spf 30 too light to use if I'm pregnant", "Can I eat scallops?" "Can I eat (insert anything into here)?", "Is is bad drive a car pregnant?", "Should I wear black colored clothes?", "If the sky is blue should I leave my house?", "If it's raining will I go into labor?" and other ridiculous things we all start to fear. In all actuality, the deodorant with aluminum I wear every day is probably more harmful to my child than my manicures. I do enjoy my gel manicures, and I made the personal decision that this was one thing I felt would be ok to continue for the every 3 weeks or so that I get them done.

On another note, I have decided that after the baby is born - I will be resorting back to doing my own nails as a cost-saving measure. Getting manicures was an indulgence I allowed myself to do in the city while working and to make up for my sometimes hellish commutes. Perhaps I should start now, but these last few manicures are my "last hurrah" or sorts.

Anyone else have opinions on the gel manicure while pregnant topic? Not that I'm inviting more ridicule...but lay it on me...at least this time it's solicited.

Miss Anything: Being able to just bounce out of bed or out of a car.

Food Cravings: Dark Chocolate

Anything make you queasy or sick: Nope

Have you started to show? Nope..nothing.
Ok...I'm gonna do it....I'm going to show what may be my one and only bare belly shot...don't get too used to this, but it really does show you exactly how I look right now.

Gender: Team Green

Symptoms: I'd like to know who's bright idea it was to place the uterus right next to bladder? Huh? Anyone? Anyone wanna take responsibility for that bright idea?

*Intense kicks! I was stopped in my tracks at LEAST 3 times on Saturday by the movement. It didn't hurt, it was just so intense that it physically made me gasp. It's the weirdest thing to describe, and I'm much more used to it now. Baby is certainly growing and running out of room!

Workouts:
UM...I TORE UP the dance floor at our friend's wedding on Saturday.  Everyone wanted to dance with the belly, including our friend Anthony. I'm sure there were some people there who were finding great humor in watching the pregnant lady break it down on the dance floor - as much as I could anyway.

Mood: Good all week, but I don't wanna even talk about yesterday...The only thing that got me to laugh and out of my funk was the Nicolas Cage version of Miley Cyrus's music video for Wrecking Ball- watch it, you can thank me later.

Looking forward to: Our 30 week ultrasound today!

Maternity Clothes: Yes

Stretchmarks: Minor stretch marks, and a little linea negra

Rings on or off? Engagement Ring off, wedding band on

Bellybutton in or out? Still in!

This week I:
*Watched the Business of Being Born, 2 episodes (out of 4) of More Business of Being Born and listened to a couple interesting Pregtastic Podcasts. Highly recommend all...reviews will be coming soon!

Reading: Wild by Cheryl Strayed

Milestones:
The baby will develop 75% of its skeleton in the next few weeks. Calcium is of UTMOST importance right now.

  1. Looking great! Get your gel manicures and just enjoy it! I had a woman tell me I shouldn't get a pedicure when I was 9 months pregnant because the massage could induce labor. I had done the research and had found it could stimulate labor in a small percentage of cases. It didn't in mine and so I just enjoyed my pedi.

    1. Yes, I was told that too that I shouldn't get any foot massages because I'll go into labor! I think I'll take my chances: bring on the manis and foot massages! Thanks for making me feel better about it :)

  2. I'm still getting gel manicures. I find nothing wrong with it. I read somewhere that pregnant women have an increased sense in smell so that they can smell harmful chemicals easier so they can avoid them (don't know if it is true, but it sounds right). The smell in there has NEVER bothered me. I can't even smell it. It's a big shop and they normally have the windows or door open. I hate when people get all judgey!

    1. I agree - some people online said the fumes in the nail salon are really what you have to watch out for. But I never really had a problem with it either and feel that my place is very well ventilated. People just LOVE to judge, especially when you're pregnant!

  3. You look great! And I say if you want the manicures, get them. You won't have time once baby's here! I think I've had my nails painted maybe 4 times since Abbie was born in December....

    1. Yea that's what I'm thinking...I can probably say goodbye to having nice nails once the baby is born...and I'm fine with that. But let me just enjoy them for now!! Thanks for making me feel better about it!

  4. You look fantastic!! I'm so impressed you can do the splits. Even though I do yoga almost every day my flexibility has gotten so bad during pregnancy! I got gel nails for my baby shower and I plan on having them done again before delivery. I think it's fine and not anything to worry about!

    1. Thanks Lady! Yea I'm going to get gel nails again for my shower in two weeks and then again for my friend's wedding at the end of October - and who knows..probably again before the baby arrives, but I agree: I don't think it's anything to worry about. Thanks for making me feel better about it.

  5. Ugh, people need to mind their own business! It is a manicure, not like a martini in one hand and a cigarette in the other! That is super impressive that you can get into a split! And I love your dress!! #addcomment

My coworker said I should have said "Yea..I just really want to have my nails done for my "cocaine and alcohol orgy" party tonight"

    1. Thanks, the wedding was def. fun, I hope to recap it soon! Yea, that woman made me very uncomfortable, but I have to say that she has really been the first and only encounter I've had with extreme judgy judgy-ness, so that seems like a fairly decent track record...hopefully this won't become the norm.

    FUCK HER.

I feel better. This post made me literally LOL several times. Your belly is kinda...taking on a life of its own! I want to dance with the belly!

    1. Agreed agreed!!! Thanks for saying what I should have said....

My belly is absolutely taking on a life of it's own. I saw my doctor this morning and she asked me if I had any questions and I said "Um...I have ten more weeks and I feel like I look like I"m going to deliver tomorrow...where does this go from here?!" Her response: "Out"

Seriously...it can only go downhill from here...

  9. OMG!!! This post was hilarious. All in all it's better to have your nails done than use deodorant but if you have to pick one over the other please choose the deodorant ;). Loved Kate's response and so glad she said it-you would have been appalled if I had. I also loved Natalie's and your co-worker's responses. You look fab in the dress, love that you danced with the "belly", and the "nude" shot was awesome! And the split-well honey, you're a little bit freaky with the flexibility. Lol! So glad I checked back on your blog because I checked it first thing this morning and it was not yet posted. I probably missed it by a minute or two but this is your best-est post yet!!!

    1. Oh i'm having a hard time with the shoes too..and shaving, and lots of things! With a straddle split, the belly doesn't really get in the way so I am going to try to keep it up!

  12. I love that dress!! Haha, you're making the bump look good. And forget that woman!! Seriously, people need to keep their unsolicited judgy-ness to themselves!! I'm sure you're totally safe in getting gel manicures done, and plus, you're the best judge of what's OK and what's not!! Ugh, people.

  13. That split is intense! I'm pretty sure if I tried to do a split right now, my pelvis would crack in half! I also have been getting gel manicures for my entire pregnancy and I've never heard of them being an issue during pregnancy. I mean I don't get them constantly but enough to be somewhat consistent and I'm not concerned in the least. I wouldn't be if I were you!

    1. LOL you crack me up - I'm sure your pelvis wouldn't crack in half, but that's quite an image!! Glad to know a fellow "on the ball" pregnant lady is getting her gel manicure fix as well! I know we're just fine.
